Abstract: Large sieve inequalities are quasi-orthogonality relations among certain arithmetic sequences such as values of additive characters, Dirichlet characters etc.. I shall talk about the philosophy concerning large sieves and explain the connection to number theory and mention some new results. No background on number theory will be assumed.
