About the Talk<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

As global temperatures continue to rise, developing regions are facing mounting climate risks that threaten economic stability, livelihoods, and growth. The UNEP Adaptation Gap Report 2025 \u2013 Running on Empty<\/em> warns of a widening gulf between the funds needed for climate adaptation and the resources currently available.<\/p>\n

South Asia, in particular, faces unique challenges: limited government capacity has meant that households and firms often bear the brunt of the adaptation burden.<\/p>\n

In this talk, Dr. Siddharth Sharma, Lead Economist at the World Bank, will discuss how the region is responding to these challenges. He will explore the barriers that hinder effective adaptation and outline the urgent policy and institutional actions needed to strengthen resilience across communities and businesses.<\/p>\n

About the Speaker<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

Dr. Siddharth Sharma<\/strong> is a Lead Economist<\/strong> in the World Bank\u2019s Office of the Chief Economist for South Asia. His research focuses on productivity, innovation, and labor markets, with a particular interest in how firms adapt to regulatory environments and technological change.<\/p>\n

He has co-authored several flagship World Bank reports and was a core team member of the World Development Report 2017<\/em>. Dr. Sharma holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University and is currently leading research on environmental challenges and adaptation strategies in South Asia.<\/p>\n

About ISGH<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

The India Sustainable Growth Hub (ISGH)<\/strong><\/a> was co-established in 2024 by the Centre for Research on the Economics of Climate, Food, Energy and Environment (CECFEE)<\/strong> <\/a>at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Delhi<\/strong>,<\/a> and the International Growth Centre (IGC)<\/strong><\/a> at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

ISGH brings together ISI\u2019s domestic expertise and IGC\u2019s global policy and research ecosystem to generate high-quality evidence for India\u2019s transition to sustainable and inclusive growth. The initiative is supported by funding from the Bezos Earth Fund<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Hub was launched<\/a> at the India Sustainable Growth Conference<\/strong> on 18 December 2024 in Delhi and is based at ISI Delhi.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
