Secure Shell

From now on, in order to log in to any of the servers in our computer centre, you have to use Secure Shell (SSH) instead of the usual Telnet software. For transferring files, you will have to use sftp rather than the ftp package. For this, you need to install SSH in your PC. We have obtained an educational site license for SSH. So all the users of ISI Delhi can use it for free. But please try to make sure that you do not use it for commercial purposes, and in case you have installed it in a machine not belonging to ISI, Delhi, then no outsider can use it. Here is how to get and install the software.
  • Download SSH for Windows, and the license file.
Install SSH for Windows by double clicking on the file SSHWin-2.2.0.exe. Save the license file somewhere as, say, license.dat. Now open the SSH Client application, click on Help -> Import License File. A pop up window will appear. Give the location of the license.dat file here. You are done. Now if you want to connect to another machine, click on "connect". A small window will appear, where you have to give the IP address of the machine you are trying to connect to ( for example, if it is isid, you have to type 202.54.102.195), your user name there, and password. If you want to transfer files from/to the remote machine, click on window -> New File Transfer. A separate window appears, displaying your home directory contents in the remote machine. Now use the `Uparrow' or `downarrow' icons in the toolbar to upload or download files.

  • Download SSH for Linux Workstations, and the license file.
As far as I know, you dont need the license file in this case for smooth running of the software. Just save and keep it somewhere in your machine. Log in as root, open an xterm, and type
    rpm -iVh filename
where filename is the name of the rpm file you have just downloaded.
