Course Summary

This course outlines and tries to understand the current frontiers of research in development macroeconomics that is devoted to broader conceptual themes in development economics, and economy-wide perspectives on the nature of the development problem. It approaches to address the "big questions" of economic development in a different way where there is no presumption of convergence, the traditional framework of development defined by conventional growth theory. Instead this course takes as the working basis that there are no fundamental differences across people of different societies and is organized around the idea of historically conditioned divergence: two societies with the same fundamentals can evolve along very different paths depending on past expectations, aspirations or actual history.

Examinations

There will be two exams -- one Mid-term and the Final exam. The exams will be held during the Mid-term week (27 February - 03 March) and the Final exam period (01 May - 12 May), respectively.

Presentation

Each student has to present one paper from the course reading materials. The class presentation must include a critical evaluation of the paper and relate the paper with the relevant literature.

Grading Policy

Your grade in this course will be based on the presentation, the Mid-term, and the Final exam. The breakdown is as follows: presentation: 20%, Mid-term: 40%, Final exam: 40%.
