CECFEE organised a Roundtable conference on “Instituting a carbon pricing policy for India: Way Forward” in collaboration with Centre for Budget and Governance Accountability (CBGA) on 19 October 2023 at the Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi. The Roundtable deliberated on the role of carbon pricing in India’s climate change mitigation strategy, focusing on the impact of taxes vs. ETS schemes in balancing sustainable growth with transition to clean energy. The panel comprised of policy experts, representatives from the government and the academic community. Smt. Chandni Raina (Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance) and Sh. Prashanth Regy (NITI Aayog) raised concerns regarding implementation of carbon pricing and its potential negative impact on the competitiveness of Indian Industry. Sh. Saurabh Diddi (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) discussed the possible expansion of India’s CCTS programme to include carbon offsets and suggested a link between the CCTS and GCP programmes. To highlight the need for future research on carbon pricing in India, Dr. Shoibal Chakravarty presented preliminary findings from a computable general equilibrium model that detailed the impact of alternate carbon pricing policies on the Indian economy.
