Sanjay Mitra is a distinguished retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1982 batch (West Bengal cadre), renowned for his exemplary leadership in both state and central government roles. Over a career spanning nearly four decades, he has held several top positions, including Defence Secretary of India, Union Road Transport and Highways Secretary, and Chief Secretary of West Bengal.

He is an alumnus of Delhi University and the Harvard Kennedy School, where he earned his Master of Public Administration. He is widely admired for his expertise in policy formulation, infrastructure development, and public administration. After retiring from government service, he continues to contribute to academia as Professor of Practice at the School of Public Policy, IIT Delhi, and as a member of various national boards and committees.
