Econ 277A Economic Development I: Development Microeconomics | |
|
Course Outline Course Summary In this course we investigate the microeconomics of development that enables us to dig below and deeper the "big questions" of economic development. We explore the very rich economics that emerges from understanding, at the micro level, the economic lives of the people living in the less developed countries. This course aims at developing the building blocks: household behaviour (nutrition, health, education, gender, family), markets (land, credit, savings, insurance), and institutions (formal and informal). A proper understanding of the "big questions" of economic development should incorporate these building blocks into appropriate frameworks of the developing countries. Examinations There will be two exams -- one Mid-term and the Final exam. The exams will be held during the Mid-term week (25 February - 1 March) and the Final exam period (22 April - 3 May) respectively. Presentation Each student has to present one paper from the course reading materials listed below. The class presentation must include a critical evaluation of the paper and relate the paper with the relevant literature. Grading Policy Your grade in this course will be based on the presentation, the Mid-term, and the Final exam. The breakdown is as follows: presentation: 20%, Mid-term: 40%, Final exam: 40%.
